New Solar Home on The Sea Ranch

Architect Alex Bergtraun—of Studiobergtraun AIA—has taken a fresh approach to traditional Sea Ranch Architecture, mixing time tested materials such as Cedar Siding with an exciting new one: Cor-Ten Steel. The corrugated metal roof is appointed with both Photovoltaic and Solar Hot Water Panels, which provide much of the energy needed to operate the home. Inset Gerkin Windows break up the exterior facade, and provide repeating visual points of interest.

Vertical Grain Douglas Fir Built-ins, by Jackson Hantzche of Premier Glass & Cabinet, provide many of the furniture needs inside the home, helping to bring the clean lines of the exterior inside. Tinted Concrete Floors, with hydronic heat, are juxtaposed with sheetrock walls, and wood paneled ceilings. Granite countertops, walk-in tiled showers, indirect LED soffit lighting, and a steel-clad fireplace complete this home. Design assistance by Gayle Forster, working with architect and client, creative interior design direction, emphasizing paint finish, furniture and furnishings.
